Can EVs provide additional functionality beyond transportation? Nuvve, a company founded by a team at the University of Delaware , says yes – by using EVs as energy depots to store electricity for power grids. The company is launching an innovative pilot program in Denmark that will allow EVs to store and return energy to power grids at periods of peak demand.
The system works by first registering specially fitted EVs with the Nuvve service. The company then co-ordinates the charging and discharging of electricity to and from the vehicles according to both the needs of the driver and that of the electric company.
The technology can especially be helpful to store surplus energy from volatile renewable energy sources such as wind power. For example, wind farms which otherwise would have to shut down if they generated too much energy for the grid at a particular time, could potentially store their energy in car batteries until the grid had room to handle the load.
